The EMS website has not yet put this up as 'Available Now'. It also wrongly attributes the encore piece to J.S. Bach. It should be PDQ...no, stop it...Johann Ludwig.

The Zurich band played tidily enough, but the programme was a bit samey, and I must say I was a bit Baroqued out by the end. Maybe one to dip into?

I agree. Why did the announcer keep referring to La Shintilla, I wonder?

... cos it's an Italian name and that is how it's pronounced in Italian?

...not because it was a leg-operated boat steering mechanism?

I think the letters 'sch' - e.g. as in 'bruschetta' - might be pronounced 'sh' in Italian, but I think 'scintilla' is pronounced the same way as it is in English, with the 'c' silent.

... no, in Italian the h makes the c hard : bruschetta is pronounced brusketta ( schiavone is pronounced skiavone, and chianti is pronounced kianti).

sci is pronounced shi - as in sciacollo, a jackal ; scimpanzé, a chimpanzee.

                    Not according to this website:

This comprehensive Italian pronunciation guide will help you lose your accent and learn to pronounce words like a native in no time!

When followed by an ‘e’ or an ‘i’, ‘sc’ is pronounced the way we pronounce ‘sh’ in English ... and gives as an example, "scena", which I've always heard and pronounced like "shayna".

WIKI also gives "sc + i (or e) = sh"

(And shouldn't "sch" be pronounced "sk", as in "scherzo"?)

I've just been listening to a young lady offering Sipio or Skipio - but not Shipio - Africanus.

... my quarter-Italian stepson has as a middle name Scipio. It is pronounced shipio.
