Yet another antidote to the Viennese Strauss Fest. Early Music Now this afternoon featured lutenist Paul O'Dette.

Branle simple – Le branle precedent plus diminué
    Branle gay

    Francesco Canova da Milano:
O bone Jesu (Antonio de Ribera)
    Fantasia (3)
    Fantasia (64)
Tu discois que je mourroye (Claudin de Sermisy)

For info, all the da Milano pieces are to be found on O'Dette's da Milano CD "Il divino", Harmonia Mundi HMU907557.

Lots of Branles in the lute repertoire!

I recall that the Capriol Suite has a movement called Bransles. Your link gives various alternative spellings for this dance, including 'brawl' !

I hesitate to mention this, and those of a polite disposition should not read on, but branler has also a very vulgar demotic meaning, and you should never call anybody a branleur.

(If you check your dictionary, you are falling into the same trap as the Lady who complimented Samuel Johnson on keeping crude language out of his Lexicon.)

Needless to say, like the fabled Lady (and indeed like many an inquisitive 11-year-old) I have discovered that un putain de branleur is even worse. Could come in useful.....
