The painter Thomas Gainsborough was a keen viol player, whose teacher was the German-born, London-based Carl Friedrich Abel. They struck up a firm friendship, and Abel is thought to have written a number of pieces for his enthusiastic pupil. It was so good to hear a programme well prepared and professionally delivered. And the music never seeped in before the talk finished except for one occasion which was clearly intended. I used to take this for granted but these days it’s a treat.
The talk was most interesting and the music wonderful.
