Anner Bylsma RIP

Very sad to hear that this wonderful cellist passed away yesterday. I was lucky enough to see him performing a CPE Bach cello concerto with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment in the 80s in the splendid setting of The Banqueting House, Whitehall. His SEON and DHM recordings are legendary.

I have many of his recordings, and CPE Bach amongst them. Never acquired his Bach Suites but perhaps Qobuz has them...

His recordings of the Bach Suites, especially the second set, have been a staple for me for decades, many other recordings accrued since notwithstanding. Also his recordings of transcriptions of a couple of the solo violin sets and solo flute partita. The Sony box series devoted to him opened up a great deal of music prevously unknown to me. Not exactly old, for an active musician these days. A sad loss indeed.

Just played a favourite cello disc: Anner Bylsma in solo pieces and duets with Bob van Asperen on organ or harpsichord on the DHM album The Violoncello in the 17th Century, including Frescobaldi and Domenico Gabrielli. Beautiful sound. RIP.

I've just ordered his second recording of the Bach cello suites, mentioned by Bryn above. Really looking forward to it, not least the usual excellent production values by Wolf Erickson.
