Schutz's Psalmen Davids: EMS 23 June

Hannah French explores Heinrich Schutz's 26 psalm settings, published 400 years ago this year, which were one of the first major collections of choral music in the German language.

I missed the first half of this lovely programme. What was that bit about the Nazis not liking Schutz? I'll have to LA, but I can't quite see what their problem might have been.

I have not listened yet, either but wonder if the context might have been a reference to Hans Joachim Moser's Heinrich Schütz. His Life and Work. Moser was a Nazi.

I'm afraid , ardcarp, that you tuned in just too late, ardcarp, to realise that the Nazis lionised Schütz as a quintessential German nationalist. They took this Courtly composer, added massed Wagnerian brass to his scores and slowed his tEmpi.

That's car journeys for you. :( I suppose it was silly of me to post without hearing the whole thing!

A most enjoyable and informative programme. I don’t know about others but I am very glad that Hannah French didn’t give up after her first few (in my opinion) rather underwhelming programmes.

              Now listening to:
              Heinrich Schütz - Davids Psalmen
Cantus Cölln. Concerto Palatino, Konrad Junghänel
video, sharing, camera phone, video phone, free, upload
