The Elizabethan Dance Band: EMS 2nd December

The Elizabethan Dance Band: Lucie Skeaping is joined by William Lyons to explore music for the Broken Consort, an ensemble heard at dances and theatre productions, and for which Thomas Morley compiled a rarely heard repertory.
Lucie Skeaping with music for the broken consort, the dance band in Elizabethan times.

This brought instantly to mind HMV HQS 1249, David Munrow and the Morley Consort, entitled 'Two Renaissance Dance Bands'. One side of Morley 'dances for broken consort' from his First Booke of Consort Lessons and one side of Tielman Susato. There have been many worse records made!

    PS Still available, with extras

I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

Julian Bream pioneered the revival of the broken consort with the Julian Bream Consort in the 1960s - the first iteration included Olive Zorian (wife of John Amis, she died in 1965), David Sandeman (flute), Joy Hall (bass viol), Desmond Dupré (cittern, lute), Robert Spencer (voice, pandora, lute) and Julian Bream, lute. JB marked the death of David Munrow at a JB Consort concert on 15 May 1976. Later (1980s) line-up included Catherine Mackintosh, Jane Ryan, David Sandeman, James Tyler, Robert Spencer and JB. He writes entertainingly about their travels in "A Life on the Road".

I thoroughly enjoyed this programme and thought William Lyons an excellent guest.

Haven't heard the programme yet, as only just got in from Advent stuff. Look forward to it. Mention was made above of:

            Robert Spencer (voice, pandora*, lute)
Bob sadly died around 20 years ago. His lovely wife Jilly, a neighbour of ours and a talented musician herself, died earlier this year. One of their sons, Jan Spencer, is a well-known viol da gamba player.

*Bandora perhaps? Or maybe it has two spellings.

Possibly two spellings - Bream certainly spells it pandora - seems there's also a pandura, and a (Ukrainian) bandura.....Bream pays fulsome tribute to him in the book (based on conversations with Tony Palmer recorded at home and on tour, this bit on a European tour by the Consort....) - Spencer along with Bream the only founder member of the group in 1960 still part of it in the 1980s.
