Lully and Rameau Live in Concert

The BBC Singers and The Academy of Ancient Music broadcast from Milton Court earlier this evening. I have to say, I found the whole thing a bit of a blast. Lightness and elegance seemed in short supply. I had hoped Sofi Jeannin might have lightened things up a bit. They tried hard with their 'French' Latin though...e.g. Low-dar-miss for Laudamus, with varying degrees of success it has to be said. Pity we couldn't see the dancers on Radio 3.

I’ll catch up but in a way I am glad this is on the radio. Wasn’t there a similar Prom a few years ago? The dance was so robust that the music was like a backing band.

I enjoyed it. Opportunities to hear live concerts with extracts from Rameau's operas are few and far between. And tonight, continuing the theme of French C18 music, there is Cherubini's Médée from the Berlin Staatsoper, conducted by Daniel Barenboim.
