Simon Heighes introduces a concert given at the Palau de Musica Catalana in Barcelona by the Spanish ensemble La Capella de Ministrers. They perform excerpts from the fascinating 14th Century illuminated manuscript - the Llibre Vermell de Montserrat, or "Red Book of Montserrat".
The manuscript was prepared around the year 1399, originally containing 172 double pages, of which 32 have since been lost. The title "The Red Book of Montserrat" describes the red binding in which the collection was placed in the 19th century. The monastery after which the book was named holds the shrine of the Virgin of Montserrat, which was a major site of pilgrimage during the time it was compiled

Spectacular place to stay, too - there is a very nice monastery hotel - The building that now houses the Hotel Abat Cisneros has provided accommodation for pilgrims since its original construction in 1563. The conversion of this old monastery building into a hostel in the late 1950s effectively turned it into an establishment of outstanding interest. Later reforms modernised the facilities, ensuring that services provided to guests by the Hotel Abat Cisneros meet the highest standards as regards quality and comfort. - should you find yourself in those parts (handy for Barcelona airport ) A magical calm descends on the place once the day trippers go home

There were a few rather modern sounding tunes in the middle and I have no idea how authentic the performance was but it was quite a spectacular fun. It was interesting to hear how different the boys' voice was from the sound of English cathedral choirs.
