Early Early Music Show

According to Genome, The Early Music Show started almost 15 years ago on 20/9/2003 - does anyone remember hearing the first episode?

I started listening two months later with "Cristofori's Florentine Piano" (might possibly have a grotty copy somewhere.)

In the good old days, there were two programmes a week plus (staggered?) repeats - halcyon days. Does anyone else miss Catherine Bott's lively presentation?

Another edition of The Early Music Show goes out tomorrow at 1pm

Curious - I thought that it started before 2003, with the cancellation of the (much better IMO) Spirit of the Age presented by Christopher Page. Just shows.

But welcome to the Forum, AuntD - you will find many of us here greatly miss Catherine Bott's presentations. (In fact, it's not totally unknown for her to pop in on the - sadly too-rare - odd occasion.)

And welcome from me, AuntDaisy. I can't say I remember the first episode, but Lucie and Catherine were a great partnership - I remember one of their Xmas episodes from, I think, a wine bar, where it sounded as if they'd made an early start . Lucie happily still with us on R3, Catherine much missed. Doversoul, our Early Music leader, is also up at night to listen to Early Music Late, which I'm afraid I'm not.

Sadly, I don't remember Spirit of the Age, we were abroad in the late 90s.

It looks to have run until 28/3/1999 where "In the final edition of the series, Christopher
Page goes in search of Tristan along the windswept coasts of Cornwall."

I think french frank will be the best person to ask about Radio3’s history. And yes, I still very much miss Catherine Bott.

The first two presenters were Catherine Bott and Andrew Manze. AM didn’t last that long - I assume because his conducting career was then keeping him busy.

And yes, Music Restored was the immediate predecessor.

I attended a spirited performance last night at Turner Sims in Southampton by the English Cornett and Sackbut Ensemble, Echoes of Venice; music by The Gabriellis, Monteverdi and their contemporaries. It also included two new compositions (competition winners) for the ensemble.

It was announced that this would form a forthcoming EMS, but no date was given.

(This seemed a useful place to post, rather than starting a whole new thread.)

As a long term listener to EMS, I am surprised it is as young as suggested. But, on review, I note the OP was in 2018. I remember AM and CB as presenters, both with great affection. I do very much like Hannah French as a presenter too.

I normally find the Early Music Show a turn-off, but I was fascinated by yesterday's Gesualdo special. All credit to Fiona Talkington and her catholic tastes.

It was one of those programmes that I thought it would be good to develop further - perhaps a 3rd after this second one. It's a rich mine/starting point and I for one always find these explorations of links and influences not only interesting in their own right but also a good way to touch on repertoire I might not otherwise encounter.

Only caught the end, but I enjoyed the music. The Voicemails I did hear didn't really add anything (gruesome eye-op. and all.)
