Music from the Hanseatic cities: EMS 3 June

Lucie Skeaping talks to cornett player Gawain Glenton about the history of the Hanseatic League - a trade route that developed across the Baltic Sea and beyond from our own shores right up to Estonia - which also engendered its own musical tradition too. Gawain has just released a disc of music from the Hanseatic cities with his ECHO Ensemble.
Lucie Skeaping and guests discuss the musical tradition of the Hanseatic League.

Was it later that St Petersburg became part of the trade route too?

Interesting subject and music but what is all this talking over the music? Has the producer changed?

I remember this happening in one or two other EMS - it drives me insane and hope it isn't going to become a habit. The music should speak for itself.

I've noticed this previously, but it seemed particularly obvious in this programme. I get the feeling it's an alternative to chopping the piece short when it's too long to fit the time available, but I do hope it doesn't continue, as it is indeed irritating - and frustrating. A pity if one of the few 'proper' programmes remaining on R3 becomes a source of annoyance instead of interest and pleasure.
