The Netherlands Bach Society: EML 1 April

The Netherlands Bach Society directed by Jos van Veldhoven perform sacred and secular works by Buxtehude, Bach, Hassler and Schein.
Using a chorale melody as a starting point in each half, the director Jos van Veldhoven has devised a programme of music with melodic links threading through each half of this concert, which includes organ works and choral cantatas by Germany's greatest Baroque composers.

This concert was recorded last summer as part of the Utrecht Early Music Festival.

...and bring as many friends as you can. By next Sunday, EML will be no longer with us. I still have a very faint hope that this new programme Unspecified may turn out to be a new series of EML but I am not holding my breath. Very sad indeed.

Difficult to believe that R3 will no longer have space for music of this quality.

Elizabeth Alker appears to be travelling in precisely the opposite direction, but Unclassified seems to be a 6 episode feature, not a permanent fixture.

Please tell me this is not the end of EML. I had a horrible sinking feeling when checking the schedule for 8 April on the web just now. After a disappointing start (for me), EML grew into a worthwhile programme. It would be sorely missed. I'll just have to watching/listening to "All of Bach" instead - http://allofbach.com/en/

Sadly (to put it mildly) the programme website states There are no upcoming broadcasts of this programme.

EML is, was sadly, one hour in a week we can be sure to hear an early music concert rather than hoping to find one occasionally amongst the main stream concert programmes. It is the minority-ist interest even within the listeners of R3 but surely the BBC or Radio3 can spare an hour far from the prime listening time?

If it is a minority interest is that through choice(doesn't engage/don't like) or because opportunities to listen are so limited, even more so now(ie self-fulfilling prophecy)? The inclusion of 'other music' debated elsewhere is a bit of a grey area, but I don't see why there can't be a better spread of 'music through the ages' presented on R3 - public perception would see it as falling into the 'classical music' pigeonhole, why can't R3?

Thanks to ferneyhoughgeliebte & doversoul for noticing my "blast from the past" presence, I've rarely been called a sliver lining. Hopefully it's not a drive-by posting. I suppose we''ll have to reserve judgement until the next two week's schedules become known, unless that's already clear in the printed RT. Trying not to think the worse. Totally agree with oddoneout's point re: "music through the ages".

I am being sarcastic but I’m not surprised if the thinking behind this is that unlike ‘other music debated elsewhere’, early music offers no issues to campaign about apart from the case of a few neglected women composers but even here, nuns and courtesans are a bit dodgy to discuss in modern context. In short, early music has no useful role to play in this socially, culturally difficult time. (Huh)

I think someone posted up-thread that this Unclassified has six weeks slot allocated. We’ll have to wait and see what comes after.
