    Caroline Brown

Very sad news: Caroline Brown, the founder and Artistic Director of The Hanover Band, passed away last night after a long, brave battle for over 5 years with a very rare and aggressive form of cancer.

That's really sad, Tony, you must be heartbroken. Thank you for letting us know. I remember the excitement of getting The Hanover Band's very first LP of Beethoven's First Symphony and First Piano Concerto.

Likewise, and also television programme about the intended tempo for the 'slow' movement (should it be common or cut time) of the 'Emperor' concerto in which the Hanover Band offered the orchestral contribution. Much as I have tried, I have been quite unable to track down of copy of the programme. IIRC, Caroline Brown was closely involved with it.

Bryn, I also have very misty memories of a BBC programme way back in the 80s about the 'Emperor', featuring, I am sure, Kenneth Van Barthold on piano - are we talking about the same one?

Quite possibly. Trouble is, I can't recall the name of the male pianist. The title was a play on "The Emperor's New Clothes", possibly with "Old" For "New". The programme included a performance of the second and third movements. I recorded the sound track to cassette, but it's long gone.

I'm sure that's the one, Bryn...and for some reason I also have a faint memory of Roger Norrington being the conductor. Just before that, the BBC also broadcast two programmes with Christopher Hogwood and the AAM which launched their Mozart symphony series..it was great, Hogwood at his most engaging and the orchestra performing in the splendid surroundings of Kedleston Hall. I just hope these programmes are still in the BBC vaults.

Your recollection re. RN is correct. Mine regarding the involvement of Caroline Brown could well be wrong:

Yes, well mistaken in my memory. See the listing for 20.00 here.

Thanks for the help in at least tracking down the transmission date and credits. No luck in finding a recording of the programme, however.

Fascinating, bravo for your research, Bryn. I wonder if you could do the same for that Mozart programme? I would love to see the details of it.
