    Marin Marais intégrale

A fascinating interview with François Joubert-Caillet on France Musique this morning. With his group L’Achéron, he has already recorded quite a bit of English viol consort music. He has been asked by the admirable Ricercar label to record the complete 600+ pieces for viola da gamba by Marin Marais. Savall recorded five discs of selections from each book, but this will be a massive undertaking. The first set of pieces is already out, but if all goes well, a box set will be available in 2022, celebrating the 70th birthday of the label's founder and the 40th birthday of the company.

    - excellent news, surprisingly overdue.

Any glimmer of hope for a "John Dunsta[p/b]le integrale" from anywhere anytime soon?

...indeed. But I'm not sure I'd survive listening to them all end to end.

...a bit like the complete Haydn Baryton trios set..some 20 CDs or more of the same sound is a lot to get through, although one cannot help but marvel at Haydn's inventiveness. I already have the five Savall/Marais discs, so not sure if I'll go for the new ones. Tempting, though...
