Telemann at the Opera: EMS 10 December

Lucie Skeaping looks at the operas of Telemann, who died 250 years ago this year. It's said he composed more than 50 works for the stage, although only 35 of them appear in his catalogue. Most of them were premiered in either Leipzig or Hamburg, where he made his home for the major part of his career.

    Hiya doversoul1,

Sounds fascinating! I'll make an exception and will be listening to R3 for that.

I must confess to finding them much more difficult to listen to than with Handel or Vivaldi operas.

Despite Lucie’s enthusiasm, I have to agree with you about Telemann’s operas.

          Hiya MickyD,

Why should that be? Any thoughts why?

Hard to say why really, Stan...Handel and Vivaldi just seem to flow so naturally. Yet I love Telemann in his other guises. Maybe I should listen to some more - I do have 'Orpheus', so must get that off the shelves again. What are your thoughts?

Maybe he didn't have Handel and Vivaldi's talent for the dramatic element. I certainly will investigate his operas in the near future.
