Hannah French marks the 250th anniversary of the death of Georg Philipp Telemann with a programme devoted to the composer's visit to Paris in 1737. Telemann was a huge star at this point in his career, so he was feted in France, where his celebrated Paris Quartets were performed.

I've just managed to grab a second hand copy of Vol.1 of the Florilegium Paris Quartets on Channel Classics - it's proved hard to find. Just wish Channel would box all three discs together, I cannot understand why they haven't after all this time. The performances are fine and beautifully recorded.
Who will Ms French include in her selection, I wonder?

On paper, this looked like part of Breakfast: nine bits in an hour. On air, however this worked, for me at least, as an excellent sampler which was, I assumed, the programme’s intention.
I always liked Telemann’s works but his music was more like a dependable reserve rather than the prime choice. But now, after all those programmes in which Hannah French ‘championed’ Telemann, I have come to enjoy his music in the same way as I do the music of Handel and Vivaldi. Also, along the way, the rather stiff sounding Dr. French has become Hannah French, one of the Radio 3’s early music specialist presenters. If you are reading this Hannah, thank you very much for your work. I look forward to hearing you a lot more on Radio 3.
