International Sacred Music Festival: EML 15 January

Simon Heighes introduces a concert from the International Sacred Music Festival, Fribourg. The Italian vocal group La Compagnia del Madrigale perform 16th and 17th century music, including sacred madrigals by Monteverdi and some of the tenebrae responsories by Gesualdo

Is that an international festival of sacred music; or a festival of international sacred music?

Could be a sacred festival of int.......well, whatever, I'm looking forward to it! Sacred but not liturgical music is quite an interesting genre. One thinks of such things as Cornyshe's Woefully Arrayed. Also Lassus's Lagrime di San Pietro was discussed here recently.

Fribourg International Festival of Sacred Music

The term International may be somewhat questionable here but I won’t argue (for this EML) as the music looks (should sound) good.

Forgive my ignorance, but is Fribourg the same as Freiburg? Thanks for any explanation.

I wondered this myself - a glance at Wiki suggests that it's a bit like "Newcastle": lots of places with the same name scattered around. The Freiburg Baroque Orchestra is from Baden-Wurttemberg in Germany, but the Fribourg concerned here (which can also be spelt "Freiburg") is in Switzerland.

            (?Just means "Free Town"?)

Quite a number of Fribourgeois or Freiburgers would eat at the restaurant where I briefly worked once. Fribourg/Freiburg was and presumably still is right on the cusp between German and French speaking Switzerland, and in their dialogue they would continually fluctuate between the two - fascinating but quite disturbing!

... but why do the French-speaking 'Fribourgeois' not call their town Villefranche?

wiki is wonderful - this is the first time I have come across Arpitan -

My first time too! With people such as yourself on the forum, one learns something new all the time, vints!

Fribourg looks very pretty from the photos; I've been through it twice, but the view from the train does not amount to much.
