Rachel Podger & BBCNOW: 23.30 Sunday 30 October

Baroque violinist Rachel Podger leads the BBC National Orchestra of Wales in some of her favourite works from the mid-1600s and early 1700s.

BBC National Orchestra of Wales: 23.30 Sunday 30 October
    director Rachel Podger (violin)
Handel: Concerto Grosso in G minor, Op 6 No 6
Bach: Violin Concerto in A minor, BWV1041
    Biber: Battalia
Vivaldi: Violin Concerto in A, RV348
Bach: Air (Orchestral Suite No.3 in D, BWV1068).
Rachel Podger directs the BBC NOW from the violin in Handel, Bach, Biber and Vivaldi.

This will just make up for the drowned Early Music Show.

After a slightly rough sounding concert on EML, this sounds wonderfully stylish. Lovely playing from Rachel Podger & BBCNOW. Very Eng...oops, British

[ed] Ah, for a filler, Catriona Young plays Rachel Podger playing Nicola Matteis. An interesting comparison with the performance on EML. Clever choice (or was this coincidence?)

This is a very similar programme to that concert earlier in the year with the disastrous Brandenburg.... Can't find the programme as I'm doing some redecorating and everything is in heaps.

I'm waiting for Rachel Podger and Brecon Baroque's Art of Fugue in the post, having head some of it on RR.

Thanks for that heads-up, dovers. Just listened and thoroughly enjoyed it. I am amazed that the BBCNOW can sound so much like a specialist Baroque group. I guess this was a small-ish group of string players...ones who responded particularly well to Rachel Podger's tutelage.

I was interested to hear that the JSB A minor violin concerto (one which I used to accompany my Dad playing whilst a lad) is now not considered an early Cothen work. We always assumed it was, being generally simpler and less sophisticated than the E minor.

Indeed, I think she has that effect on those around her! She and BBC NOW leader Lesley Hatfield play beautifully together.

This is almost a repeat of that 11 March concert which I attended in Swansea, minus the Brandenburg 2 and Conc for 2 violins, and plus BWV 1068.

Broadcast on Afternoon on 3 on Friday, 30th September. (Introduced by Ms Dereham, who, immediately after the Double Concerto had finished, kindly informed us that "that rocked - as Bach would have said".)

It seems we have no middle ground between jokey presenters and none at all!

Good grief. Poor Patricia Hughes must be turning in her grave.

Including audiences. I was fortunate enough to attend a concert of hers some years ago and felt that if there was a person for whom the phrase 'infectious enthusiasm' was coined it was her - and not in a bumptious, over-excited sense. My sister, who has been fortunate enough to play with some pretty inspirational people, rates her very highly for her professionalism, musicality, and sheer niceness.

Oh I do hope not. She deserves better than that.

I would like to know what you think of BB's Art of Fugue; I heard them play a little of it in Brecon last October - liked what they did - but are they a bit too jolly all the time? I wish there were a baroque group with eg a bassoon and a flute in this music, one to a part, as well as the strings. A broken consort. Any suggestions?

No bassoon but the entire performance of this is the cover CD of this month's BBCMM (as advertised on the What baroque... thread ).
