In Support of Early Music: EMS 9 October

Lucie Skeaping is joined by guests, violinist Catherine Mackintosh, director Peter Holman and Nick Wilson from King's College London to discuss how Radio 3 helped to support and shape the Early Music movement in its early years from the 1950s through to the 1990s.

Very much looking forward to listening to this.

A clip from David Munrow’s Pied Piper and (I think but I haven’t checked yet) an interview with Christopher Hogwood. Plus Essential Early Music recordings. An hour worth 24 hours.

The montage at the beginning didn't bode well - no early choral music at all.

I'm now almost halfway through, and still nothing.

Ten minutes from the end we do get a mention of Clive Wearing and the London Lassus Ensemble, and then a producer (whose name escaped me) who spoke of those liturgical reconstructions that Clive was involved with - but he swiftly moved on to Handel, and no examples were given!

Yes it was an "instrumental" programme, which I didn't mind at all! One item on Ms Mackintosh's packed CV that Lucie missed off was her membership of the later incarnation of the Julian Bream Consort

Fascinating conversation, and historical perspective. The points that some of the earlier early instrumentalists, if I could put it like that, just weren't very good, and that HIPP performance was much further ahead on the continent than it was here (my first exposure to it was seeing the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis doing the StJP under August Wenzinger, and lutenist Eugen Dombois, a Basel alumnus, in Oxford in the late 60s.....that the attitude in the early days was just to pick up unfamiliar instruments and have a go, as nobody really knew how to play them.....
