Robert Hollingworth introduces specially made recordings of music from the Medici Codex - a music book prepared for Pope Leo X in 1518. Leo was the second son of Lorenzo "The Magnificent" of the Medici family, who was Pope from 1513 to 1521. The codex contains 53 motets and was presented to Leo's nephew, the Duke of Urbino at his wedding to a French princess in 1518. In discussion with Tim Shepherd of Sheffield University.

I admire Robert Hollinsworth's scholarship and of course that of today's guest. I also thought they presented the programme really well; informative yet with a light touch. I was fascinated by the Medici Codex and by the extent of the (unlikely?) courting of French and Low Counries musicians in Italy's city states.
A pity we didn't have a specialist EM group for Robert to conduct. I have to watch my Ps and Qs. The BBCS did sing one little piece, Sicut Lilium by Brunel, quite gently.
