    Jakob Froberger EMS May 15th

He was quite a guy! I've only encountered him via a few small organ pieces. There was so much more to him, e.g. arriving in London dressed in borrowed sailors' clothes! And for lovers of the harpsichord, lots of music to enjoy.

Harpsichordist Sophie Yates explores the life and music of Johann Jakob Froberger.

... his harpsichord music is wonderful. And some of it is even playable by amateurs - I have derived enormous pleasure from stumbling thro' his works over many years.

I only really came across him several years ago when I got the Gustav Leonhardt Jubilee Edition. It's a very good collection and the Froberger disc is superb (coupled with works by his friend and rival, Matthias Weckmann). He certainly had a colourful life: was court organist in Vienna, studied with Frescobaldi in Rome and toured around all over Europe, allegedly acting as a spy, being wooed by princesses and getting captured by pirates.

I treasure an Archiv CD of Kenneth Gilbert playing Froberger superbly on a beautiful instrument. Then came another excellent version from Christophe Rousset on Harmonia Mundi.

That is a very beautiful disc. But my favourite Froberger disc must be the first of the two recorded by Blandine Verlet for Astrée, which begins with Suite XX, "Meditation, faiste sur ma Mort future..."
