No-one knows for sure the birth-date of Tudor composer John Sheppard, but it is thought to have been around 600 years ago in 1515-16. Lucie Skeaping is joined by singer and musicologist Sally Dunkley to explore the life and work of one of England's finest composers, with performances by The Sixteen, The Tallis Scholars, Stile Antico, the Gabrieli Consort, The Clerkes of Oxenford and the Choir of Westminster Abbey.

Well, it's damn shame that the current series of EXCELLENT recordings etc by Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford under Stephen Darlington are NOT in the mix for this programme. an ensemble that has made earlier Tudor msic, esp the Eton Cboirbook central to its recorded output.

Instead, we have the usual suspects - JEG, The Sixteen, the Tallis Scholars. Who plans these things? Do they know the recorded literature in the field?



PS: and I'd certainly add Stile Antico to my list of fine ensembles in this field too.

We didn't have JEG did we Draco? What we did have (but not entirely) was recordings by groups with which the excellent Sally Dunkley sings/has sung, right back to the Clerkes of Oxenforde....I thought the combination of her expertise and those recordings made for a triffic programme

Actually Oxenford, Richard, but rather nicely given in the playlist as Oxfenford: an attempt to move Oxford nearer Cambridge?

(Mrs A and I sang in media vita quite recently. Tricky remembering where to go back to for the various repeats...and doing it without rustling the pages too much! How about a 'through composed' edition, Sally?)

There isn't any Sheppard in the Eton Choirbook. Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford recorded a Sheppard disc twenty years ago. There is a more recent all-male Sheppard disc by the Choir of St John's College, Cambridge.
