    Gesualdo Madrigals: EML 1 November

Carlo Gesualdo, Prince of Venosa, is known for the striking harmonies of his music, as well as being notorious for the violence of his personal life. He wrote seven books of madrigals of which six survive, and it is the sixth book that forms the basis of this concert given at the Stockholm Early Music Festival in June 2015, performed by Collegium Vocale, Gent, with lutenist Thomas Dunford, directed by Philippe Herreweghe.
Elin Manahan Thomas with a concert of Gesualdo madrigals sung by Collegium Vocale Gent.

    Looking forward to this.
Nice to listen afterwards to Stravinsky's completion of two of the madrigals which have come down to us incompletely.

This was some of the BEST singing I have ever heard, with Gesualdo's tortuous part-writing and harmony delicately underscored by Tom Dunford's impossibly brilliant and sensitive lute playing. This really is a must. Anyone who has attempted Gesualdo's Sixth Book will know the difficulties, not least with the Italian underlay for non-Italian speakers. These were just taken as read, and the performance was expressive, flexible and....well, words fail me

They do me, too (the words, that is). What a superb performance of this extraordinary music! I had never felt /heard the extraordinariness of the music so plainly.

[ed.] …applause was not allowed, said EMT. So it can be done and it was wonderful.

I have become a bit obsessed by this performance and have probably replayed it a dozen times. What I would dearly love is the Italian text and I wonder if any clever Googler can find it online....otherwise I'll just have to fork out and order the music (from Petrucci.?)
