John Eccles’ Semele is a real discovery to me. To most singers, English seems to be an unfamiliar language and it shows but Semele is excellent and the music is most enjoyable.

You did well to skip some of that Pluhar concert, DS! I watched all of it and though I don't mind a bit of fun to get rid of the dry and academic approach to some baroque music, much of this was just silly and totally unfunny to me. Why is it that Pluhar picks on Purcell to take such liberties? I guess we should have known what to expect after that disastrous CD. Still, very much enjoying the Eccles - I had heard of him before, but not this work...what an interesting bridge between Purcell and Handel.

Loved the Lamentations...not so very un-Oxbridge, The Kings Singers did a OVPP recording of it years ago which is not dissimilar. I love the changes in pace and mood. It can get very foursquare without.
