    EMS "Palestrina 500" 9/3/2025

Looking forward to this Early Music Show "Palestrina 500", 5pm 9th March 2025

    Palestrina 500
    The Early Music Show

Hannah French is joined by members of Stile Antico to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the birth of the composer Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina.

Born in the hill town of Palestrina near Rome, Giovanni Pierluigi is considered one of the finest composers of music for the church. His surviving output is prolific, consisting of over 100 settings of the Mass in Latin, and more than 250 motets.

The early music group Stile Antico have spent the last couple of years recording many of Palestrina's works ahead of the quincentenary, and three members of the ensemble chat with Hannah about the composer's life, including connections with the famous Papal Chapel at St Peter’s Rome and the church Santa Maria Maggiore.

They introduce their recording of Palestrina's Missa Papae Marcelli is the setting of the mass which is reputed to have saved church music from being banned by the Catholic Church.

The final paragraph of that supporting text pretty much sums up for me why Palestrina's music is so boring compared to that of Gesualdo, Tallis and co. It was towards Gesualdo as model that Stanford directed the young recalcitrant John Ireland, whereas thankfully it would be the singularity of Tallis and Byrd, not Palestrina (whom I suspect VW respected rather than was inspired by who won the day.

The final paragraph actually makes no sense!

They introduce their recording of Palestrina's Missa Papae Marcelli is the setting of the mass which is reputed to have saved church music from being banned by the Catholic Church.

      to whoever wrote that!

Recording already mentioned in New releases (and Concerts I'm looking forward to: Beverley Minster in May).

Cut and paste fail methinks; this is from Stile Antico's website. It really shouldn't have been difficult to rearrange the wording if that was deemed necessary.
The album is based around Palestrina’s famous Missa Papae Marcelli, the mass setting which is reputed to have saved church music from being banned by the Catholic Church.

Typical of the slapdash standards now commonplace across their networks. Today I saw the word "tarriffs" on a BBC news headline.
