EMS "The Notre-Dame School and its musical legacy" 8/12/2024

An interesting EMS this Sunday, "The Notre-Dame School and its musical legacy", 5pm 8th December.

The Notre-Dame School and its musical legacy

As the cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris reopens its doors to the public after more than five years since fire caused its closure, Hannah French examines the early musical history of this extraordinary building.

With the help of Antony Pitts, founder-conductor of the choral group Tonus Peregrinus, Hannah explores the influential Notre-Dame school of polyphony - musician-priests like LĂ©onin and Perotin who worked in Notre-Dame in the 12th Century. These composers codified a new style of multi-voice liturgical chant known as organum, which flourished just as the cathedral itself was in the process of being built.

Hannah also looks into the musicians who followed in the footsteps of these musical pioneers across the following six centuries, including organists Louis-Claude Daquin and Armand-Louis Couperin who worked in Notre-Dame in the 18th-century.
Hannah French explores music in Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris from the 12-18th centuries.

Good to see medieval music geting the lion's share of an EMS. There seem to be few singers interested in it these days, ditto lutenists and players of the rebec and other medieval instruments. I will certainly be listening to this one!

Interesting. Might well tempt me to listen to R3 for this. NB Anthony Pitts formerly an R3 producer.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I didn't know that, thanks. A person of principle.

BTW, it's not the first Notre Dame themed EMS...
"Versailles and Paris Month: Notre Dame and the Sorbonne" 24/2/2008 (This ended a month of EMS on one theme, two each weekend... the very idea!)
"Notre Dame" 27/4/2013, with Catherine Bott - 850th anniversary of the first stone of Notre Dame being laid.

Two of my favourite discs are Music of the Gothic Era from David Munrow and the Perotin one from the Hilliards.

Oh dear, the thought that those two very different releases are so close to each other and so far from today!

I listened to the Perotin tracks from Music in the Gothic Era quite a lot on April 15 2019, having visited Notre Dame the previous day and only left Paris that morning (it wasn’t me, guv). Although not quite as much as Larry’s Apparition de l’église éternelle.

edit: no of course I did not type Larry.

Where is the photo of DM on the phone? Is it in the booklet?

It seemed an anachronistic photo, which made me smile.
From discogs & the LP sleeve notes, or there's a similar photo in the 1959-1981 Archiv gold box booklet, p87, for CDs 33 & 34.
The 1947 - 2013 Archiv silver box has the single CD version, 60:31, with the LP phone photo on p66; same cover though.

Ah, thank you! Don't think my single Archiv reissue has that photo but I'll check. I'm guessing he was speaking to the producer after a take.

No, just a software glitch - AI confused with Larry Olivier

                          That would make sense.

I did a comparison of the two "Music of the Gothic Era" version I have here - highlighted in green are the single CD tracks (with small variations in order).

Ah, so by getting that box, it looks like you were fortunate in getting all the material from the original 3 LP box....sadly there is only a selection on the single Archiv CD.

I'm listening now - thanks for the prompt.
Wish they'd included the extensive LP notes by David Munrow (& Michael Freeman) - the scans on Discogs are difficult / impossible to read (musn't grumble, Discogs is an amazing resource).
