    Alan Curtis (1934 –2015)

I’ve been listening to CD review on iPlayer, and Andrew has just said Alan Curtis had died. He died last month.

One of the most dependable conductors of Handel’s opera to me, and a lot more.....

Very sad news - as you say, a superb conductor of the Handel operas. He shall be greatly missed.

Sad news indeed - I had been hoping for him to go on and give us some more Handel operas, especially "Poro", which is missing from the catalogue.

I heard the news of Mr.Curtis' passing in the same way as DS this past weekend. It was rather a jolt, as I'm foolish enough to think our musical champions will stride the stage forever, bathed in lux aeterna.

The obit. in the “Gramophone” is rather muted, comment elsewhere on the web gives a better appreciation of his achievements and the respect and affection due to Mr. Curtis.

Perhaps now is a good time to watch again Mr. Curtis in life, doing what he did best, at the helm of a live concert performance of Ariodante:

Handel: Ariodante, opera seria in three acts, HWV 33

          Ann Hallenberg: Ariodante
          Roberta Mameli: Ginevra
          Varduhi Abrahanyan: Polinesso
          Ana Quintans: Dalinda
          Nicholas Phan: Lurcanio
          Matthew Brook: Re di Scozia

          Il Complesso Barocco
          Conducted by Alan Curtis

In death, there can only be one farewell:

Händel - Funeral March from Saul Oratorio HWV53

              Pegleg!! Where have you been?

I watched the Ariodante after I posted my OP.

Here’s Alan Curtis talking about Handel’s opera. I love the way he mentions Messiah. I have this Alcina. Gorgeous.

Not exactly been in good shape for some months now, and in the last quarter of 2014 I was rather pre-occupied with this:

Yes, I watched that video clip too, and I have his Alcina (along with the William Christie recoridng) and Rodelinda CDs.

I am sorry to hear that you haven’t been well. I hope whatever it is is well under control.

I haven’t read it but this looks most impressive.

Don’t miss Andrew’s interview with Alan Curtis on next week’s CD Review.
