What do John Dowland, Fleetwood Mac & The Beatles have in common?

Wednesday's New Generation Artists, "From Britten to the Beetles", was a bit of an odd mixture (the R3 norm?), but did have some Early Music...

    From Britten to The Beatles
    New Generation Artists

Current members of Radio 3's New Generation Artists scheme in music ranging from the melancholy songs of John Dowland to the passion of Waxman's Carmen Fantasy. And, between them, a performance of the quartet that Benjamin Britten wrote in 1945 to mark the 250th anniversary of the death of English composer Henry Purcell.

    Franz Waxman : Carmen Fantasy
Geneva Lewis (violin), Ryan Corbett (accordion)

    Dowland: Can she excuse
Fleetwood Mac / Christine McVie: Songbird
    The Beatles: Blackbird
Dowland: In Darkness let me Dwell
Hugh Cutting (counter tenor) Daniel Murphy (lute)

Britten: String Quartet No. 2 in C major, Op.36
    Leonkoro Quartet

    Duparc: Extase
    Duparc L'invitation au voyage
Johanna Wallroth (soprano), Simon Lepper (piano)

    Richard Rodgers: Spring's Here
    Fergus McCreadie (solo piano)
Waxman's Carmen Fantasy, Britten's 2nd Quartet and songs by Dowland, Duparc & The Beatles.

Oh, I thought you were just setting us a riddle. I was going to suggest: the blues
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

John Shea did mention the cult of melancholy, so I think you win.

All three use a tuned and fretted multi stringed instrument to accompany the human voice.
All three set multi verse lyrics
            All three wrote love songs
All three frequently use modal harmonies and keys
So they have quite a lot in common really.
