Masaaki Suzuki at 70 - The Early Music Show

Hannah French talks to the great Japanese conductor, organist and Bach expert Masaaki Suzuki on his 70th birthday. He shares his love for Romantic music and its influence on his interpretations of Bach, explains how creative tensions in rehearsal fuel his ensemble Bach Collegium Japan's passions, and discusses how he discovered the perfect sound for Bach's organ works by hunting out historical instruments in East Germany.

Mark Seow joins Hannah in the studio to chat through the latest goings-on in the early music world, including some of their favourite recent and forthcoming releases from the likes of The Gesualdo Six and the Irish Baroque Orchestra.

Plus Hannah hears from some of the winning groups at this year's REMA Awards, the European Early Music Network's prizes that were awarded at the Stockholm Early Music Festival earlier this month.

This gives me a bad feeling. Does it mean that, not content with taking away some of the (already inadequate) airtime devoted to EM, for Seow witterings, we are now going to have a yakkety yak session with him to further erode the content?
There's more than enough material with Suzuki's 70th to fill the hour.

Catherine Bott is joined by the harpsichordist, organist and conductor Masaaki Suzuki. Since 1990, Suzuki has been the musical director of Bach Collegium Japan, and his interpretations of Bach, and in particular the cantatas, have received great acclaim for their fresh, lyrical approach. Catherine talks to him about his musical education, his approach to composers such as Bach, and the impact of his Christian faith in his music making. Music includes recordings of works by Bach, Monteverdi and Zelenka.

I agree about the sometimes shoddy blurb. Why can't they put the playlists up before the programme airs? After all, it's pre-recorded.

The Suzuki interview is very interesting, but the music clips are far too short (or have been so far; and it started with a non-Suzuki Handel Samson clip.)
Cake ~15mins in, followed by a longer bit of the Coffee Cantata... and that looks to be it! Barely 20mins.
EM News and the off button beckons.

Having listened to the 2007 Catherine Bott EMS, I wish they'd gone for a whole programme just on Suzuki, as oddoneout said.

The Suzuki's worth hearing - I think he & Hannah French had a good time.

The 30min EM News was a Mark Seoh & Hannah French swap new recordings with a bit of news thrown in, e.g. MS conducting Platée.

A somewhat bitty programme / curate's egg. I would have happily listened to more / longer Suzuki recordings...

Badly thought through; would have been better to stick to the usual format of main programme(in this case Suzuki) plus annoyance five minutes(which on this occasion seemed to be Mr Meow promoting his own gig), as I don't see what the point of the exchange of recordings section was.
