EMS "Ensemble Augelletti - A Curious Mind" 9/6/2024

    Sunday's EMS looks interesting.

Ensemble Augelletti - A Curious Mind
For their first visit to the Beverley and East Riding Early Music Festival, Ensemble Augelletti - the newly appointed BBC New Generation Baroque Ensemble focus their musical lens on a curious and well-connected local clergyman and musician – Edward Finch. Specialising in making musical arrangements of the most popular music of his time, including Henry Purcell’s wonderful ‘Golden Sonata’, Ensemble Augelletti tell Finch’s singular story and they perform some of his compositions and arrangements alongside music by his friends Purcell, Handel, and Geminiani.

Thanks, I'll give that a listen; I'd have missed it otherwise.

That sounds like the sort of thing Radio 3 does well and one 'wouldn't hear anywhere else', as they say.

Hopefully the 'Great Man' theory of musical history has had its day and more people are realising how fascinating was the work of 'general practitioners' of music, toiling away often in obscurity, encouraging amateurs. . W G Whittaker is an example from the 20h century.

The EMS time change caught yet me again, busy doing other things...

Really enjoyed the Geminiani encore - The Broom of Cowdenknows / A Bonny Christy.

Mercifully no EMS News - but next week's "Masaaki Suzuki at 70" is another matter

A very enjoyable and informative edition, and all the better for not having the "news" cutting into the content. So depressing to hear that that unwanted intrusion will be foisted on us again next week. One can hope it isn't the beginning of a permanent return I suppose, but I think that would be a vain hope?
