    Tonight vocal ensemble The Clerks mark the 600th anniversary year of the Battle of Agincourt with a programme of music associated with the court of Henry V, performed in the Quire of York Minster.

      Just heard the first half. It's repertoire I love...but I'm not bowled over. The plainsong is very note-note-note whereas it needs some fluidity of line. And the polyphony needs some line too. All a bit dull and foursquare so far...but I'll give the 2nd half a go.

        Did you enjoy the interval music - bit of a crass juxtaposition, I thought.

        I went and got myself an ice-cream instead.

        The Taverner Choir and Players last Saturday were excellent and also in the Quire (as tonight). Shame they couldn't have broadcast that.

          Simply could NOT believe that interval stuff!

          Talk about lazy, lazy programming.

          I liked the Clerkes voice mix, nothing show-off stratospheric or gravelly deep at all, which produced forthright, plain, musicianly. workmanlike ensemble singing, in which all lines interwove.

          Maybe this was how it sounded? Reminded me of David Munrow's Musica Reservata choral tracks, rather than, say, the Clerkes of Oxenford?

            I was there and I have to agree. It came off a bit dull, the 2nd half was better.
