    Early Music Proms

    Some excitement is going on on the other Prom thread but where early music is concerned, it’s just plain dismal. One name that does not crop up often other than on TTN is Caldara, and that’s it. Tallis is fine but surely, he doesn’t need yet another Prom outing, and L’Orfeo. Does it have to be Sir John & Co. again? Couldn’t it have been an ensemble like La Venexiana for a change? And the two Handel works on CBBC Proms. Just forget it.

    13:00 Monday 20 Jul
    Tallis: Andrew Carwood & The Cardinal’s Music
    The Cardinall’s Musick performs Tallis’s extravagant 40-part motet ‘Spem in alium’ alongside other sumptuous sacred music in the first of this year’s Proms Chamber Music concerts.


    19:30 Tuesday 4 Aug
    Monteverdi L’Orfeo: JEG &Co.
    Period-performance specialist Sir John Eliot Gardiner conducts the work often credited as being the world’s first opera – Monteverdi’s 'Orfeo' (1607).

    Vivaldi, Caldara, Geminiani: B’Rock Baroque Orchestra Ghent and Mary-Ellen Nesi
    This small Belgian ensemble has set out to revolutionise the world of early music: they make their Proms debut with music by Vivaldi, Caldara and Geminiani.

    CPE Bach, Telemann, Vivaldi: Alina Ibragimova and Apollo’s Fire
    Violinist Alina Ibragimova joins harpsichordist/director Jeannette Sorrell and ensemble Apollo’s Fire to perform a wealth of early music, including works by C. P. E. Bach, Vivaldi, Telemann and J.S. Bach.

    Join CBBC presenters Barney Harwood and Dick and Dom for an introduction to some of the greatest pieces of classical music and a celebration of children’s creative responses to them. Broadcast on CBBC on Sunday 2 August.

    do the Bach solo violin and solo cello proms count ? (+ Goldberg variations and a Bach organ prom that appears to last less than 30 minutes)

      Quite "late" for "Early Music" (as dovers points out, very little pre-Baroque programmed) - and the Goldbergs played on Piano, YoYo Ma using his modern 'cello ...

        Alice Coote is renowned for her performances of Handel and in this Prom she explores some of the composer’s finest arias for both male and female roles. Harry Bicket conducts The English Concert.


        This is not listed under Handel (i.e. I couldn’t see it).

        Less dismal but quite honestly, I’d liked to have seen (heard) more of other Bachs.

          Maybe Yo Yo will play the old fashioned 1712 one, not the new fangled 1733 .

            Prom 48: Late-night Bach
            BBC Singers
            Academy of Ancient Music
            David Hill conductor
            David Hill conducts the Academy of Ancient Music and the BBC Singers in an all-Bach programme which includes his Mass in G minor and the Magnificat in D major.


            Can’t the AAM left to do their own thing? Or have they been called out to back the BBC Singers? Looks an odd combination to me.

            Yes, ‘meagre’ is the word. And mostly routine. Early Baroque (or any Baroque era for that matter) is an area where both new and established groups have been discovering a very long list of ‘new’ composers. The Proms would have been an ideal place to let people hear these works instead of all these familiar works.

              The blurb for the event says that there will be more than just the 24 minutes of Bach listed: "French organist Thierry Escaich puts the Royal Albert Hall organ through its paces with a programme of works by Bach, Brahms, Mendelssohn – and some of his own compositions."

                for me there is IMVHO apart from Tallis and Monteverdi no early music at all in these Proms.
                Nothing from before the 17th century....
                and if we want to count baroque as early (which I by definition don't), why no Heinichen e.g. with some Dresden concertos combined with Vivaldi's concerti per il orchestra di Dresda, to show that there is more than the big names and war horses around even in the baroque?

                Where are the flemish polyphonists, or Palestrina, or Victoria e.g.?

                  I couldn't agree more with these comments. Gone are the days when we could rely on the AAM to bring us unknown, neglected repertoire. The Bach Magnificat and a Brandenburg Concerto for the umpteenth time.

                    Where does it say what instrument he'll be using? There may a practical reason not to use his Stradivarius cello. Often, these hugely valuable instruments are owned by some corporation or foundation, and are loaned out to players on the condition that they're only used in standard tuning, so (if that is the case), he'd have to have a second instrument for the Fifth Suite at least. See the sleeve note to Steven Isserlis's recording - he uses a different instrument for that suite.

                          Oh, yes - probably quite good to hear, too - and the two nights of the solo violin works, too. Not so sure about Schiff's Goldbergs, though, but that's because I've never taken to his Music-making, not because it's on Piano. (If it'd been Jeremy Denk, on t'other hand ... )

                          But the high-profiling of non-HIPP Baroque events in this year's season does further emphasize the low priority given to Early Music. (A similar neglect of contemporary Music, too - to wander off-thread a moment - nothing this year to have Barbi giving his spleen a good vent. The whole season looks dull, safe, forgettable - and utterly uninspiring.

                            I agree, though even the better-known composers don't fare that well (apart from JSB). AFAICS there is hardly any Handel, Corelli, Pergolesi or Rameau. Some of the less frequently played Handel cantatas, or Chandos anthems - rarely heard at the Proms - would have been good, as I think choral music works well in the RAH, much better than solo Bach.

                              Quite. Just one concert of music pre-1600. Pathetic.
