    Some interesting stuff

I had an amusing mishearing this evening, when Ian Skelly (I think) perpetrated a most uncharacteristic bit of indistinct pronunciation which had me thinking that after Leicester Cathedral choir at the Richard III ceremonies, we were going to have some more exposure for a Midlands choral foundation.

In a trailer for this event, I could have sworn he said "13th century choral music from Walsall"... ah! interesting, I thought.

    In fact, it's this segment:

7.30pm - POLAND: Witold Lutoslawski Concert Studio, Polish Radio, Warsaw - LIVE

    ANONYMOUS
Breves dies hominis - Rondellus (Paris, 13th century)
Christus factus est. V. Propter quod et Deus - Graduale
Quis tibi Christe meritas - Conductus (Paris, 13th century)

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Ian Skelly's trailer for this said something about 'getting away from it all'. I wouldn't have said that Bach's St Matthew PAssion was exactly 'getting away from it all' music.

And 'beautiful music for Holy Week'????
Who on earth writes his inept scripts? Holy Week music is celebrating a 'beautiful' week of festivities, is it?

          Pah and Grrrr.

Listening to a very fleet of foot, eloquent performance of the St John Passion (or St Johannes etc). Great!

Two years ago I listened to the St Matthew from Amsterdam on Good Friday, short sleeved, in blazing sunshine, whilst (light) gardening in the Scottish Borders. On Easter Monday, we were looking out at sleet driven by the wind at 45 degrees......

Indeed and nor was it consistent with a transmission from Walsall. Silly me!

              .

              Apologies to any Walsallians here

yes, when one thinks how turgidly slow performances used to be years ago, you wonder people weren't put off listening to Bach

I was - by a lot of them, anyway (the singing of Janet Baker, Ferrier, Schreier, DF-D and one-or-two others was always worth waiting for - and still is). As a teenager, I adored reading Bach's scores, but had to wait until my mid-twenties before the performances I heard made me love what I heard even more.

Indeed. I listened, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I sang in a performance in the Maltings, Good Friday 1982, (cond. Boettcher) and I was surprised at how short today's performance was in comparison.

I enjoyed Ensemble Peregrina’s performance from Poland but can’t say I am terribly impressed by Bach from New York. Is this how they sing Bach in the US?

Quite - a contrast to the Passion earlier. Very plodding.

Agreed. All was wonderful until that Cantata. Not for Holy Week. Not a good performance. And why in English?

I greatly enjoyed Jan Jakub Ryba's "Stabat mater" from Plzen.
