Quite. Bit bored of them now...
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I blow hot and cold on Purcell songs, and I have sung quite a few of them in the distant past and quite recently, but Carolyn's performance was riveting throughout. And yes, the mic's did seem rather distant. One did have to listen hard to appreciate it. Worth the effort, though!

Some very interesting notes here http://www.hyperion-records.co.uk/dc...c=D_CDS44161/3 which make the point that many of the subtle Classical allusions in the texts are lost on contemporary listeners, present company excepted!

Perhaps our acquisitive, museum-like approach to ancient music in programming and presentation doesn't help either, but that is not a criticism of the present programme, which seemed well balanced.

Great to hear one of my ex London (Brompton) Oratory colleagues doing so well!
