Viola da gamba & harpsichord recital

Next Monday, 1pm, the live Wigmore Hall recital poses as "The Early Music Show" :-

Bach: Sonata in D major for viola da gamba and harpsichord, BWV1028
Abel: Pieces from the Drexel Manuscript
Bach: Sonata in G minor for viola da gamba and harpsichord, BWV1029

    Paolo Pandolfo (viola da gamba)
    Markus Hunninger (harpsichord)
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

This is going to be wonderful.
Pandolfo is a superb player, the Bach sonatas are masterpieces of the genre, and Abel is a an unjustly neglected composer.
    I can't wait!

And played on a bass viol, not a 'cello for a change.

The slow movement of the G minor is pure magic.

I only heard the Bach D Major - very robust, - he seemed to be "digging in" more like a cello. Which is strange because Nathalie Klein played them on R3 last Friday, and she was trying to make the cello sound more like a gamba, quite successfully I thought. Maybe Paolo was getting no help from the Wigmore acoustics.

Yes. I did wonder if he'd saw it in half at one point.
