I'm listening now to the recording by Patrick Bismuth. As in the Melkus recording of 1967 which I also admire (but then it was my first opportunity to hear these pieces, many years ago) he uses a large continuo section, although without Melkus' highly elaborate and obviously written-out realisations. I'm not sure that these performances have enough character, but the violin playing is certainly beautiful.

This music is quite extraordinary. Sublime, I would suggest. I have Andrew Manze, Richard Eagarr etc, and John Holloway and Davitt Moroney etc playing these. Each of these recordings bring out the best in this music, imo.

Presto Classical has the new recording by Sirkka-Liisa Kaakinen-Pilch (violin) & Battalia as one of their 'Discs of 2014', at £10
