    L'Avventura London: EMS 9 November

Trade Roots. Lucie Skeaping introduces highlights of a concert recorded last Saturday at the Brighton Early Music Festival, in which L'Avventura London, directed by Zak Ozmo, performed African and Brazilian music held in the 16th- and 17th-century archives of the Santa Cruz monastery at Coimbra in Portugal.

Lots of esprit...a most enjoyable programme. What an amazing place the monastery of Sant Cruz at Coimbra must have been. Lucy asked Zak Ozmo (director) a very pertinent question about how much the pieces had been 'arranged' by him and his group. His answer seemed to indicate quite a lot! It rather reminded me of the 'treatment' David Munrow used to apply to make the music spring to life. I also got the impression that the group members did more than one thing (e.g. played more than one instrument and sang). BTW could anyone tell whether the alto/mezzo voice was male or female?

      Female, surely?

        Thanks MC. I was uncertain.
