From two Spanish Renaissance songbooks: EMS 20 July

    Lucie, is this you???

Lucie Skeaping presents highlights of a recital by soprano Maria Cristina Kiehr and lute player Ariel Abramovich recorded earlier this month at the National Centre for Early Music as part of this year's York Early Music Festival. The programme for this concert is drawn from two Spanish Renaissance songbooks, the Cancionero de Palacio and the Cancionero de Segovia - music from the dawn of the Renaissance.

This is a very interesting concert. I attended the performance at the Festival. Maria Cristina Kiehr has a lovely voice and Ariel Abromovich accompanied her on the vilhuela de mano not the lute. It was wonderful live. It will be interesting to re listen tomorrow.

(I know this is over the top but here goes)

This is how I imagine Orfeo’s singing would have sounded like had he been a woman (or a countertenor…). Absolutely exquisite, mesmerising, transfixing….

Many thanks to all those who have made this festival and the broadcasting possible.

        Doversoul,

I cannot think of a better description of the exquisite singing of Maria Christina Kiehr. I listened today and was again totally mesmerized. My hope is that she and Ariel Abromovich will go on to record this music.

A gorgeous recital. I love the sound world of 16th century Spain, and this is a great partnership.
