    Hilliard Ensemble: EMS 11 May

Lucie Skeaping talks to members of the Hilliard Ensemble as they celebrate their 40th anniversary, and plays a selection of their many recordings.
    […]

Didn’t we have the Hilliard 40th anniversary programme not so long ago? But this is not a repeat. Personally, I am perfectly happy without the saxophone.

I totally agree with doversoul and ardcarp. I am perfectly happy without the saxophone as well.

I do like their Gesualdo Tenebrae Responsories.

On air, they have just said to Lucie Skeaping they are doing the Gesualdo Tenebrae Responsories this year - or is what I am hearing on R3 now a recording from many years ago?

BUT have they not already recorded it in 1991 and 2008?

          Confused.

But whatever, if we were ever looking - 'The Choir', are you listening??? - for a jewel of a programme and how to present and seriously but entertainingly learn about a musical genre, then this was it.

I think people miss the point completely
Manfred Eicher is interested in MUSIC !
take a look at what ECM puts out

The collaboration with Gabarek might not be the greatest music in the world BUT it wasn't a cynical marketing ploy by any means.

            Neither was this http://www.john-potter.co.uk/being-dufay.php

An amazing improvisation with ancient music. Utterly beautiful too.

I'm listening to more ancient music these days and seriously getting into it.

WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL US ABOUT THIS BEFORE!

              P.S. Many thanks.

Sidestepping saxophones, what a FANTASTIC edition of EMS this was. Lucie talked interestingly and intelligently (and occasionally humorously) with the group. There was no silly 'putting words into their mouths' and we learned of the history of The Hilliards and of the musical ethos of its members. This really is one to listen to.

                  Agreed!!

I have no problem with the saxophone, being a jazz fan aswell. In fact, it was hearing Officium on - erhem - CFM in the early 90s that opened my ears to the world of "Early Music".

I am greatly looking foward to hearing the Hilliards (no saxophone!) at Brinkburn Music this year.

I couldn’t agree more. This is exactly how I expect guests to be on R3’s programmes.

WE (i.e. EMS Board) have been here since beginning of time. Welcome (if by ‘you’, you mean US)

In that case, I’ll keep my D’s and B’s unsaid.

Rogers Covey Crump is quite a phenomenon. Quite apart from his expertise in matters of tuning, his voice is unique. It seems capable of taking the tenor register up into what many would consider alto territory without a discernible break and without apparent effort. And he can sing very 'straight', blending in most of the time, but he can be a soloist when needed.
