        Schmelzer and Biber: 13 June

Austrian baroque music by Schmelzer and Biber 'spiced up' by Les Passions de l'Ame directed by Meret Luthl

Johann Heinrich Schmelzer: Ballet - Die Fechtschule (The Fencing Academy)
Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber: Partita no.6 (from 'Harmonia Artificiosa-Ariosa')
Schmelzer: Sonata - Die Turkenschlacht bei Wien (The Battle against the Turks at Vienna)

Dazzling chamber and ensemble works from a golden period in the 17th century, enlivened in these performances with the exotic sounds of dulcimer, tamburello and eastern percussion instruments
        .
Meret Luthl conducts Swiss early music group Les Passions de l'Ame in Schmelzer and Biber.

I'd have thought, of all composers, Schmelzer and Biber wouldn’t need to have their music spiced up…. Still, we’ll see (hear).

Ignore the inane blurb (spiced up etc.). This was a most enjoyable concert expertly presented by Jonathan Swain.

No early music concert this Saturday

Once upon a time, early music was all about voices. Why did this precious hour have to be given away to yet another Schubert Lieder instead of an early music song recital or a choir concert?

(Just in case; we are in the middle of The Classical Vice fest)

Max Emanuel Cencic and Pomo d'Oro: 27 June

The Croatian-born countertenor Max Emanuel Cencic teams up with the ensemble Pomo d'oro to perform Baroque Italian music including works by Vivaldi, Albinoni, Gasparini and Caldara

Here is a classical voice worth listening or at least hearing.

Vivaldi: Concerto in F, RV 569 ('Per l'orchestra di Dresda')

                This should be good:
                Next week
Paul van Nevel conducts the Huelgas Ensemble in sacred music from before 1400, including works by Perotin and Machaut, in a concert recorded at the 2015 Schwetzingen Festival.

Perotin, Machaut plus: Huelgas Ensemble 11 July

Music in Apocalyptic Times - Paul van Nevel conducts the Huelgas Ensemble in sacred music from before 1400, including works by Perotin and Machaut, in a concert recorded at the 2015 Schwetzingen Festival

Another early music concert. It should be very good. If only we had the playlist.

Indeed. For Machaut and Perotinus it isn't too difficult to guess, but then we still have some 200 years to cover.... unless the apocalyptic times are those as defined by Tuchman's A distant Mirror

If only we had the playlist.
Indeed. The probability is that they'll include Perotin's Viderunt Omnes which seems to be the most frequently performed of his oeuvres...or perhaps they won't for that reason! Anyway, I've got my copy out ready.

Skip Sempé & Co. 18th July

Baroque French music by Leclair, Couperin and Marais played by Capriccio Stravagante and Skip Sempé, with soprano Judith van Wanroij and baritone Henk Neven

A tantalising selection of opera extracts and chamber music movements recorded earlier this year in the fine Rococo Theatre in Schwetzingen

Skip Sempe directs Capriccio Stravagante in music by Leclair, Couperin and Marais.

I didn’t know that you could have a ‘tantalising selection’ but a programme without the playlist can be tantalising although it is more like plain annoying.

The playlist so far is singularly uninformative.

Do you think they are serious?
