Early Music at Saturday Lunchtimes ...

According to yesterday's announcement, we have a "new pattern" to Saturday Lunchtime concerts which is to feature early music courtesy of the EBU. It's not the EMS, and I wonder how long the series will last. What do you think?

    Yesterday's programme:

Fontana: Sonata No 2 in D
Frescobaldi: Toccata prima in G minor
Uccellini: Sonata overo Toccata quinta, detta 'La Laura'
Marini: Sonata quarta per sonar con due corde
    Bertali: Ciaccona in C
Handel: Suite No. 3 in D minor, HWV428
Handel: Sonata in G minor, HWV364

    Rachel Podger (violin)
    Marcin Swiatkiewicz (harpsichord).

Found this forum because of that announcement! I think we were very poorly served when we lost the Saturday EMS. As we seem to get many repeats on Private Passions surely we could have kept the Saturday EMS if only by playing archive shows. Hopefully this new Saturday programme is a step in the right direction and probably cheaper as it's recordings and uses the continuity announcer rather than paying a presenter.

this new Saturday programme is a step in the right direction
More a tiny step back from the wrong direction, maybe. I am trying not to utter the words thankful, small and mercies.

But thanks for flagging this up, Pegleg and Paul.

        19 April

Le Concert des Nations and Jordi Savall perform works by Praetorius, Lully and Purcell. The concert was given in the Pau (Pablo) Casals Hall in Barcelona earlier this year.
        Music includes:

Michael Praetorius: Dances from Terpsichore (1612)
Jean-Baptiste Lully: Orchestral Suite from Alceste (1674)
Henry Purcell: Suite from The Fairy Queen (1692)

I've been looking forward to today's show, you can't go wrong with Le Concert des Nations and Jordi Savall - 25 years of wondrous music.

So I'm listening to Philip Pickett and the New London Consort on youtube: http://youtu.be/zFgwOIq2ZWg to get me in the right mood. Those lucky folk down under got to hear the entire concert: http://www.abc.net.au/classic/conten...11/3941084.htm

A chopped-up concert, of course. The original also contained:
William Brade - Stage music (1617)
Guillaume Dumanoir - Suite del Ballet d’Stockholm (Les Musiques Royales des 24 viollons du Roy, 1630-1940)
Johann Rosemüller – Sinfonia Seconda (1667)

I am grateful for what we get, but it is such a pity that it is only part of the concert. All the sense of occasion, and the feeling of being there, which are part of the joy of listening to concerts on the radio, are lost.

I couldn't agree more. But the answer is this: http://www.francemusique.fr/emission...-09-2014-20-00

Just click on the "listen to broadcast button" near top of page. Once again, I'm so grateful for the web.

Thanks for flagging this up, mercia. I'm really thrilled that the OAE are doing this piece...it is a wonderful work of Rameau's and the 3 CD set originally issued by the small French company STIL, featuring Leonhardt and La Petite Bande is like gold dust to find...I guard my set preciously. Let's hope that the OAE might issue a recording too.

Sorry, it wasn't meant to be that big! But anyway, was this issued with a translation of the libretto?

Sadly no, Pegleg...just a small miniaturised copy of the original 18th century libretto. This company, STIL, had some strange copyright law which meant that the recording could never be re-issued, if I remember correctly. It's a shame, as the piece is full of some wonderful music.
