        L'Arpeggiata’s Mediterraneo: 17 May

        Mediterraneo.
A concert of early music fused with traditional folk and jazz-style improvisation from Christina Pluhar and her ensemble L'Arpeggiata. The theme is music of the Mediterranean and this performance comes from the 2013 Rhine Vocal Festival .

This is the album of this programme.

I must say this is rather too folksy and crossover-ish to my taste. I wish they’d go back to the early Italian repertoire and Monteverdi they performed so movingly.

European Union Baroque Orchestra: 24 May

Two days after the 2014 European elections, a chance to hear one of the ensembles supported by the EU: an orchestra of young players from across Europe who spend a year honing their Baroque skills with top musicians. In this recent concert from Copenhagen, the EUBO perform with their Danish Music Director Lars Ulrik Mortensen.

J S Bach: Orchestral Suite No 2 in in B minor, BWV 1067
Leclair: Flute Concerto in C, Op 7 No 3
Rameau: Acante et Céphise - Orchestral Suite
          Anne Freitag (flute),
          European Union Baroque Orchestra,
          Director Lars Ulrik Mortensen.

Do they (whoever they are) need to bring in elections to play Rameau and Leclair?

Russian Orthodox chant from the 16th and 17th centuries.

              7 June

The Russian Patriarchate Choir lead by Anatoly Grindenko, perform Russian Orthodox chant from the 16th and 17th centuries.

For many years Russian Orthodox chant was rarely heard in its country of origin where it was suppressed. Then, once the Soviet Union had collapsed, it began to find a new popularity. This group of male singers was founded in the early 1980s and has succeeded in bringing this music to a wider public. Typically Russian, the choir is renowned for its astonishing basso profundo sonorities and raw emotional performances.

The Russian Patriarchate Choir performs music from the Russian Orthodox Church.

And totally irrelevant to what was being sung.

Interesting that Peter Day's Afternoon Classics that followed was a brilliant programme for a VERY big change. Clerkes of Oxenford, Alfred Deller, David Munrow,
                    Scarlatti et al.

It was also very notably critical of the current Radio 3 schedules and content. Beautifully presented by a total pro.

Whilst it was an edited version, this was an excellently programmed and performed live concert. The atmosphere in the hall was almost tangible. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I wonder why we can’t have it whole?

Paul Agnew & Les Arts Florissants: 20 June

[…] Les Arts Florissants with their Associate Music Director Paul Agnew perform Italian music: their programme centres on Monteverdi - madrigals from the fifth of the eight books of madrigals he published - and also features music by his Italian contemporaries Luca Marenzio and Emilio de' Cavalieri.

This is A Brief Introduction to Monteverdi’s Madrigals by Jonathan Swain. Excellent. Catch it before it disappears.

This really really really annoys me. I am amazed that the BBC appears oblivious to the damage that this chopping-up of concerts does to the quality of their offering.

                                Ricercar Consort 28 June

Highlights of a concert given by the Ricercar Consort and director Philippe Pierlot in vocal music by Buxtehude and his contemporaries, including Johann Christoph Bach and Johann Michael Nicolai. The concert was recorded in the Church of Saint-Loup, Namur, in Belgium last July, and features soprano Celine Scheen and bass Matthias Vieweg.

This, and other concerts on this programme seems to be surplus of Through the Night. Whilst any early music is welcome, it would be nice if we could have a freestanding (?) programme made for R3 listeners.
