Not in the 1980s - then it was the BBC Special Effects Department.

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
              Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

The resurgence of the Dr Who episodes has left me rather cold, with this particular programme. I used to love it when they had Tom Baker etc I but since David Tennant et al, nothing has enthused me to this series.

The two most genuinely scary series from my youth were these, featuring the absurd legend that is Jon Pertwee:

The latter, featuring the faceless Autons who conceal themselves as shop window dummies and then break out and go about massacring passers-by in the high street haunted me for a long time (I remember dreading the sight of the plastic fingers round the edge of the door to my bedroom as it stood ajar)

I see the latter has been released as a blu-ray as it was shot on film, and apparently looks as if it was made yesterday... This thread may have cost me money! ...and sleep!

Ha - that's what you get for dredging up old TV series.

Dr Who used to be made in a tiny studio at Lime Grove, on a site which is now a block of flats, so Time Lords have limited powers!

The extras used to join us in the canteen, usually in full make up and costume because time was short. It could be a little disconcerting in the queue!
