David Mellor's Classic FM show

I've been listening this evening to David Mellor's show on Classic FM. It's the first time I have done so, and I must admit to being quite impressed. I believe he has a different theme each week, and tonight's is "The young ones", performers who might be described as prodigies. I've heard the 16 year old Menuhin playing the slow movement of the Elgar, with Elgar conducting, recorded in 1932, and the 12 year old Kissin in a live performance of Chopin Piano Concerto no.2, as well as various other young performers, some well known, others less so.

And, since 7pm, no adverts, and not even a break at 8pm for the news. I might give it another try next week!

Thanks for alerting us to this. I was pleasantly surprised by his programme several (10?) years ago. I was not expecting him to be as interesting as he turned out.

I'm afraid I found him rather self-opinionated (and often inaccurate) and extremely charmless. Perhaps I was too much aware of his previous history in his day job - and even more aware of the numerous genuine musicians/critics who could do a better job.

Definitely charmless and self-opinionated, but he was entertaining and interesting!!!

They formed a good duo. I have a suspicion that RC was allowed to be himself more than he is now - ironic that he has to dumb down for the supposedly more up-market station.

I'm sure prejudice plays a part here, but the combination of Classic FM and David Mellor is one I find easy to resist, (even though I did once stand next to Mr Mellor at a urinal in the Barbican).
