"What Remains"... good creepy stuff but other TV series are available !!!

The second of four hour-long episodes of the above is on at 9pm today. In common with everyone I know who saw it, I was gripped by a very superior production, well-written and intriguing and featuring v good performances by the likes of David Threlfall, David Bamber (very creepy!) and Russell Tovey.

To an extent, part of its success comes from the 'unity of place' which concentrates the story around the disparate residents of the various flats in a large converted house, in the attic of which the event triggering the drama occurred.

To anyone with a taste for the darker kind of police thriller, I recommend a catch up...

Drama. A woman's decomposed body is discovered in a loft. Detective Len Harper questions her neighbours, trying to uncover who she was and why nobody had noticed she was gone.

and three more weeks of watching
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Especially in view of the fact that in this, David Threlfall looks, if anything, even more like a zombie than in his more familiar role as Frank Gallagher!

We're enjoying this serial, too, and loving the way in which David Threlfall inhabits his part.

YES! For once, a detective series that doesn't involve a young woman dressed only in underwear running in panic through moonlit woods. An intriguing mystery hinted at - and some superb writing (the look that David Threfall gives the arrow in the wall is worth six pages of script).

But I'm also glad that Vera's back on ITV; I like Vera.

Vera is a treat before the ghastly Downton returns

I am in total agreement with Caliban's post - I thought it gripping, creepy and, as it mainly was set in the house - those shots of the staircases - it seemed a bit claustrophobic (which of course added to the creepiness) I'm really looking forward to episode 2 tonight. I've never seen Shameless so have no previous knowledge of David Threfall, I did think Russell Tovey was excellent. I just hope a promising start does not disappoint at the conclusion.

(As to Vera, I saw the first hour thinking I'd catch up on the second half if I wanted to know whodunnit. I didn't bother, it seemed badly constructed and not worthy of two hours)

That was great! The arrow in the wall the morning after. Which of us hasn't... ... ahem.

And nor does it involve a policewoman arriving alone at a deserted factory by night with a gun and a surprisingly fragile torch, and her mobile phone NOT set to silent - no electricity in the building, natch, but 20:20 phone reception despite the remote Baltic coastal location

              I like those too though!

I want to like it but the first one was crassly written with leaden signposts at every turn of the plot, I thought

                  - mind you, even Mr Selfridge was a treat in comparison with Downton! Did anyone ever watch Mr Selfridge? It had the same story every episode - some catastrophe escaped at the last minute, with a different visiting celebrity (Bleriot, Woolworth, Emmeline Pankhurst, Rolls & Royce).

Sounds like a good title for a detective series - Mark Tristan: loner, maverick, with a taste for fine wine, mediaeval poetry and Scarlatti Sonatas: seems cold, ruthless, tenacious; but adores his estranged daughter who blames him for the death of her mother ...

Oh well, each to their own.
Having watched episode 2 - I am no further forward - and, all the neigbbours are nasty!
But, was it suicide after all? I suspect so.

Some VERY sharp writing and brilliant acting. And boy is it a nasty one or what.
                            BUT
                            how is to end?
