Coming from the same town I was aware of John Byrne from the very early 70s, initially as a painter of Humblebums' LP covers, portraits and then of course as a playwright...'the Slab Boys Trilogy' which documented his days in 60s Paisley; the hilarious 'Normal Service'; and then of course the wonderful 'Tutti Frutti' among other films for TV.
However he's always been a painter and recently was commissioned to paint the dome in the Edinburgh King's Theatre. BBC Scotland followed him for a few days and the result was this, I thought, delightful film which shows Byrne in all his eccentricities and shows Edinburgh beautifully in the process. One of the truly great Scots in my opinion. Not sure if this half-hour film will see the light of day outside Scotland but here's a link if you're interested.
