I believe even this remote part of the country is in the known universe, so please make that one more who thought Vicious was hilarious. The script was OK - but when delivered by those three stalwarts of the stage, aided by some promising youngsters, such as delightful Ash, it turned into something really memorable.

I'm with Barry Cryer, who knows a thing or two about comedy:-

The veteran comedian and Radio 4 panellist lambasts Derek Jacobi and Sir Ian McKellen's comedy series

Why should a comedy about older gay men have to "be really good and moving" to be blessed by Barry Cryer?

Well, I didn't watch the first instalment of "Run" and from this review I'm glad I didn't depress myself. Grim does indeed seem to be the word for it:-

Another week, another breakout performance from Olivia Colman. That chirpy face and sprite smile encourages a nation of fans to follow her into all manner of beastly nooks and dread crannies in the hope that somehow with Colman for company it’ll be all right. Increasingly, it isn’t. After Tyrannosaur (murders husband) and Accused (son murdered) and Broadchurch (investigates child murder), we have Run (sons murder).

(Probably still more fun than "Vicious" though....)

I took the advice of the reviews and did not watch it because of Violence and depressing Reality....

Top of the Lake may have more legs, enjoyed the first episode. I dare say it will end up as being offbeat predictable....but as with The Returned , stunning scenery and good actors....http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode...Paradise_Sold/

Ditto here, eighth: surely we ALL need inspirational characters to people today's drama - characters who stand up with alternative values against the prevailing ethos driving those nearest to tread hardest on those at the bottom of the pile? Exemplary people like the Asian shop steward in David Edgar's "Destiny". One patiently waits in hope one will live to see the day...

Again, is one encouraged to really care about/for any of the characters in the Top of the Lake?

Apart from Tui, the young girl - the answer is No. Perhaps they may introduce a male character who is likeable? However, stunning scenery, whether I'll continue with it I don't know.
As for Run I lasted just under 10 minutes, once the violence started I switched off (probably my loss as The Telegraph gave it a 5* review but I really didn't want to watch anymore)

This thread certainly made me laugh more than "Vicious".

Pee 'n' Am is a classic combo (my favourite soup!) and it's been a while since we've had a little ding-dong

On topic - "Run" didn't tempt...

...(& off topic, nor did the "Lake" programme - especially since I swore solemnly to avoid the Campion oeuvre after "The Piano" provided my worst 2 hours in a cinema ever. I remember almost weeping with boredom, but couldn't leave as I was being 'taken' and it would have been rude )
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I keep meaning to try it! keep missing it. Too much music to listen to! I will try and grab in on iPlayer. Thanks for the reminder.

Shall I bung this on a new dedicated thread?
