    Saved! More good news!

Salisbury Cathedral from the Meadows, one of Constable's "most important paintings", is bought by the Tate for a "bargain" £23.1m.

Glorious, wonderful, masterful genius! A good job done indeed, and for less than many thought might have to be paid. The day that this left Britain would have been a very sad one.

some interesting little PR phrases in that BBC report.

"could have sold for as much as £40m at auction"
"Sold by the children of the late Lord Ashton of Hyde, the work was at risk of going abroad had ..."
"I know there was a major American museum that asked for first refusal."

Kinda makes it all sound like the sellers , the Lottery folks and the Tate are quite the good guys.

Anyway, nice to see it saved for the nation.
