Sir Colin Davis BBC4 TV tribute programmes: Friday 3.5.13

Including a new hour-long interview from earlier this year.

    Sir Colin Davis with love

    In Performance BBC4 7:30pm - 8pm

Petroc Trelawny pays tribute to acclaimed classical music conductor Colin Davis, who died last month at the age of 85. The programme includes footage from his Davis' televised concert at the 2011 Proms, in which he conducted part of Beethoven's Missa Solemnis with the London Symphony Orchestra and Chorus and the London Philharmonic Chorus. With soloists Helena Juntunen, Sarah Connolly, Paul Groves and Matthew Rose.

    In his own words BBC4 8pm - 9pm

An interview with Colin Davis, filmed shortly before his death. The conductor - who shot to fame in the 1960s as Malcolm Sargent's successor at The Proms - talks to John Bridcut about his life, beliefs and musical passions.
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Thanks for that Cali. I was going to mention it today as I saw it in the Radio Times.

Many thanks for pointing this up. Perhaps a copy could go on the tribute thread on the Talking About Music board, for those MBers who never scan these depths

The Prom concert which Sir Colin was due to conduct is now to be dedicated to him. Daniel Harding takes charge, with Elgar 2 replacing Sibelius 2 in the programme:

BBC Proms has announced that one of its forthcoming concerts will be dedicated to the memory of conductor Sir Colin Davis, who died in April.

An even finer tribute in Dresden next week, where the Staatskapelle gives a free concert, conducted by Robin Ticciati, to remember Sir Colin, their conductor laureate.

Our chief weapon is surprise...surprise and fear...fear and surprise.... Our two weapons are fear and surprise...and ruthless efficiency....

Classical music on Tv never does it for me (unless it's opera), but I'll be watching the second programme - fits in nicely with the evening's offerings.
