This series is a white elephant stall of minor plots, characters....a hotch potch of history and class....a bizarre mixture of psychology meets cartoons....again as with many prog's superb acting....delivering plot leaps and unlikely dialogue....and sex which seems to happen for (or not happen) reason of : 'it just happened for no particular reason'....Maxine Peak is supposed to be a strong wife pushed to breaking point by hard over- work, a feckless husband (how can anyone be so feckless), and tragedy....yet she looks ready to fight 10 rounds at any time....And GOD gets a hammering too, as a refuge for the feckless and unfulfilled ....So many flaws in this production....

Well, we are quite enjoying it - although we admit that it hasn't been one of the best of its genre. OK for a Sunday evening after church, I reckon.

It serves, however, to remind us of the atrocities of WW1 - something that we should never forget.
