I think I've given up on Spiral.

Just too unpleasant to watch, really. Terminally stupid, borderline psychopathic, thuggish and violent police getting everything wrong, never turning the lights on when they go into dodgy dark buildings, etc.

No more. Now, where did I put that Pollyanna dvd?

Quite agree, Monty - in fact I thought that from the first episodes. Awful.

There must be a German series coming along at some stage. That might be rather morbid too....

I agree, I was on the verge of turning over some many times and once or twice resorted to shouting at the box, never a good sign, but there was nothing else on so....but then again, near the end when that poor 'innocent' boy had been clouted around the head too many times for anyone's good, and the girl got in the car...well, predictable or what! What about something from Finland, surely they must feel left out!

i have to confess that, despite sharing your distaste for the stupid, louche, aggressive cops, i am quite hooked by the sub plots of M Judge, and the lawyer chappie who has just partnered that conniving redhead .... ... definitely second rate when compared to the Scandinavians ...

So I guess what you're saying is, we'll see it through to the end!

IIRC the previous series of Spiral featured different crimes in each episode, all pretty grisly, whereas this seems to be a single set of crimes. I still think it's pretty good, but as so often with these series once the novelty wears off so does the edge.

Mind ou, watching Rubicon makes one realise how formulaic/anodyne some series are by comparison....

As my ol' dad used to say, the problem with conferring special privileges on most people is that they're not only tempted to use them, they often abuse them too.

He included himself in that too - rarely took his library book back on time

I suppose that a tv series in some way reflects the attitude to the police of the people of the country where it was made...? Is this how the French view les flics?

Oh, and - the Tomlinson case, the arrest of the landlord in the Bristol case, the NoW hacking enquiry, er, is this all so unrealistic, even in Britain?

PS And don't we need a Spiral thread?

OK, here's the pitch. Sarah Lund is called in to work on a Europol investigation into a shadowy but extensive international crime syndicate as a result of a mysterious docklands killing in Gdansk. She can call on various resources including from time to time other fictional European detectives e.g Wallander, Laure Berthaud, the Italian Zen etc. Her life is made harder by the obstructions placed in her way by her Danish boss and also the choleric Europol police commissioner. There is, over 30 episodes, the obligatory roll-call of false leads and innocents arrested (the European Arrest Warrant having a field day), and the cardinal rules of never informing a colleague when searching a dark cellar or warehouse and never turning the light on are faithfully observed. The series culminates in a pursuit north across the Tatrai mountains and eastern Baltic cities, and ends at the top of the Fernsehturm in Berlin Alexanderplatz, where a shocking revelation threatens to implicate senior politicians in three national governments as well as two European commissioners. As a result, Lund is suspended on grounds of severe stress and placed under close watch in a secure mental institution on the outskirts of Copenhagen. The closing scenes show her knitting one of those sweaters for her new friend Laure Berthaud but unbeknown to her supervisors there is a message concealed within the pattern...(cont'd p 94)
